Author Racquel Jones explains her love of supernatural characters and why she decided to create the world of the Haydens.
I wasn’t always into supernatural things. Growing up,
everything was like a blur when it came to anything like monsters, fairies or
vampires. Sometimes it still feels that way when it comes to what I love. One
of my friends once called me a chameleon because I like a million things and
can’t seem to stick to one. But, I’ll tell you guys what brought me fully into
the supernatural world; Anime. Japanese animation. Yes, I know, for those who
know what Japanese animation is would say it’s a bit obvious, but really it
isn’t. When I began watching that, it helped me into the world of Manga,
Japanese comics and later into the world of books.
My first book was in fact a fantasy book about elves. I
don’t think I ever finished it, but it helped me get a grasp on what I really
wanted to write about. Since then, I got the idea for Desolate City. Like most drafts, everything didn’t start out as it
is in its final form. Vampires were my main focus. Then I began to throw other
supernatural beings in there. I even researched things from all over the world.
Nothing seemed to stick. That is, until I met one of my closest friends,
Markia.
When I met her, I was at a loss of how I wanted The Albertos Series to go. I just wanted
something different. She provided that for me. With her own story ideas, she
helped me go further with this story than I ever thought imaginable. Vampires
became a secondary thing along with werewolves, fairies and centaurs and I made
something new. Well a few new things, but we won’t get into that just yet.
Later, while planning, I realized that despite making my own
supernatural beings, I needed something else. Something that can help the story
have a solid plot. That something became Haydens. If you were to ask me where I
came up with the name, I would only be able to tell you that it came off the
top of my head. Only later did I realize that it could be a person’s name.
Oops. Anyway, it stuck with me so I kept it. Especially since it is the
shortened name of Haydoria; a world from which is believed all Haydens—demons
and the like—reign from. Everyone will learn more about that once the series progresses.
What I can tell you is that I’ll be having my own little Hayden week on my blog
soon. J So please look out
for that!
What inspired me for the Haydens of the world was not only
what used to be a favorite anime, Inuyasha created by Rumiko Takahashi, but
also The Mortal Instruments by
Cassandra Clare. I adore both series and they taught me a lot about creating my
own supernatural beings along with organizing them. And I seriously can’t forget
Melissa Marr’s awesome Wicked Lovely
series. That series helped me see fairies in a completely different light. In
fact, if not for anime or any of these books, Desolate City wouldn’t have been born nor would have Haydens. I’m
just thankful that there is anything supernatural in this world at all. I don’t
think life would be as interesting. <3
