I wish I could tell you the contents of this book were purely fictional. That I, Adela Arthur, was just a normal sixteen year old from Portland and that dragons, giants, elves and mermaids were just myths. I am the last Arthur and I was brought to the human world after a Volsin, filled with greed, began to strip the light from our kind.
The human world was supposed to be a safe haven... but he s found us and the only way to stop him is to go back to Cielieu and begin training as a student in the Elpida Castle of Light.

Review: Adela Arthur and
the Creator’s Clock is a fun and entertaining read for middle grade fiction
fans who love a story filled with brave characters, crazy adventures and
fantastical creatures!
About the Author: JUDYANN MCCOLE was a senior in high school when she started working on Adela Arthur and the Creator’s Clock during her history class. It started off as short story for a group of young kids she babysat for and grew into an adventure she herself wanted to go on. She is currently attending college in Virginia. Where she hopes to finish the next adventure in Adela Arthur’s life. She begin writing when she was in middle school most of it was just simple poetry but she was inspired by Maya Angelou and even a little of Dr. Seuss.
As with any
great story, this one begins with a girl named Adela Arthur who is sixteen
years old and who believes there is nothing extraordinary or noteworthy about
herself. She’s a nerd who isn’t popular or really an outcast. She just exist
and roams the halls of her school trying her best to keep her head low and get
through each day with her best friend Hector. Her favorite time of day is when
she gets to go home and be with her grandfather who may be blind but has faster
reflexes and better hearing than a professional football player. But one day,
after being assigned to work on a group project with her best friend and the
dreaded mean girl, Willemenia, Adela’s life flips upside down and a world she
never thought impossible comes crashing into her own. Big secrets are revealed
and Adela and Hector set out on adventure that will change their lives.
Adela is a
character many young girls can relate to. She’s navigating her way through
school and through life, trying to discover who she is and if there’s anything
really special about herself. One of my favorite aspects of her characterization
was how much of an awkward nerd she is! She can be shy and likes to hang back
in the shadows but underneath that exterior, she’s a fighter. Even when she’s
scared she’ll stand up for herself and her friends. She’s got a big heart and
can be brave when the time calls for it and she’s a loyal friend. Hector is a
bigger nerd than Adela and even quieter. He doesn’t say lot so when he speaks
he really has something to say. He’s a bit awkward and closed up at the
beginning but he has good reflexes and a good heart.
The world
building and magical elements to the story, especially the creatures from the
world of Cielieu were wonderfully crafted. It’s was great discovering what
abilities existed within each one and the Elpida Castle of Lights was a
beautiful place. The best aspect was how the magical abilities were created. I
loved that the Volsins could control and project light as a way to protect. There
are four different groups of Volsins: the Red Diamonds, the Emerald Dens, the
Golden Hives and the Sapphire Falls and the light they each manipulate can be
used to create lightning bolts or arrows which was a really great element.
From chimeras to
dragons to mermaids, Adela Arthur and the
Creator’s Clock is a story not simply filled with a lot of really
interesting creatures with unique magical abilities but it’s a story that offers good lessons to young readers and a story about self-discovery. It has
action, betrayal, and a world made of wonder that fans of fantasy and
middle-grade fiction (and early YA readers) will thoroughly enjoy reading.
