Synopsis: Gigi, Bea, and Neerja are best friends and total overachievers. Even if they aren't the most popular girls in school, they aren't too worried. They know their real lives will begin once they get to their Ivy League colleges. There will be ivy, and there will be cute guys in the libraries (hopefully with English accents)! But when an unexpected event shows them they're missing out on the full high school experience, it's time to come out of the honors lounge and into the spotlight. They make a pact: They will each take on their greatest challenge—and they will totally rock it.

Gigi decides to run for student rep, but she'll have to get over her fear of public speaking—and go head-to-head with gorgeous California Will. Bea used to be one of the best skiers around, until she was derailed. It could be time for her to take the plunge again. And Neerja loves the drama club but has always stayed behind the scenes—until now.

These friends are determined to show the world that smart girls really can get what they want—but that could mean getting way more attention than they ever bargained for. . . .

Review: Three Words: Get. This. Book!

I discovered this book via perusing Amazon as I tend to do since I’m always searching for books regardless of the fact that I have too many as it is . . . I digress. Upon discovering this book, I decided to give it a chance and place it on hold at the library. I am DEFINITELY happy I did! Smart Girls Get What They Want turned out to be a great first book to the new year!

Right from the beginning, I fell in nerd-girl love with Gigi! I could completely relate to her character in so many ways. As a fellow nerd who worked hard at attaining good grades and achieving in school, I could totally understand Gigi’s need achieve academically while trying to also discover who she is and how to expand outside of her bubble. From the start, Gigi’s quick wit and snarkiness will have you laughing! I loved her narration throughout the whole book and as her character grew, I loved her even more.

Bea and Neerja are the best friends every girl should have! They are loyal to the core, very supportive and protective. Gigi, Bea and Neerja build each other up instead of putting each other down. They support each other’s successes and console each other through the struggles they face. They face everything as a team with wonderful humor, cute styles, and sass.

Michael Ipolito. I cannot tell you how much I loved his character! Mike is goofy and playful and so laid back, you’d think he took some secret happy pills no one else knows about. But Mike is also wonderfully and vastly intelligent. He secretly loves to read classics and poetry. He aces his classes and is great at sports. If I could find a Michael Ipolito in real life (just a few years older) I’d be all over that like white on rice! *dreamy sigh*

Will is supposed to be the other male interest but I knew what he was up to right from the beginning. Technically, Gigi has a crush on him, not Mike. For a while Gigi can't think of Mike that way because she can't see passed her prejudices. Will, on the other hand, loves all the same things she does and flirts with her off the bat and acts like a gentleman. But don't let that fool you, Will isn't everything he seems. I really enjoyed how the author flipped around both Mike and Will's characters to challenge people's preconceived notions of how jocks or nerds are supposed to categorized vs. who they really are. Gigi's decisions when it came to Will are probably the only element that dragged that book in certain instances. I could understand her being swept away by Will in the beginning but after a while, she should have caught on to who he really was. Even Mike pointed it out to her at some point.

I loved the romantic relationship between Gigi and Mike. It grows slowly and starts with a big cheating scandal. Underneath the fluff-like plot and sarcastic dialogue, there are deeper topics being discussed and brought to light in a way that will make readers be able to pick up and connect on them without causing the book to feel weighed down. Gigi has to get over her misconceptions and already cast prejudices against Mike to discover who he really is. I just loved watching Gigi being so smart but making such a fool of herself around Mike. It was equally fun to watch Mike tease her. I especially loved how Mike nicked named Gigi, Einstein and was the only one who call her that. So adorbs.

The plot is made of part fluff, part romance and a tale of self-discovery and coming-of-age. Gigi, Neerja and Bea have to learn how to break out of their world of honors classes, straight-A’s, and constant studying to discover how to just have some plain, old, good nerd fun.

Smart Girls Get What They Want is full of hilarious, awkward, nerdiness that will have you laughing out loud throughout and hugging the book when it’s over! I will DEFINITELY be checking out more of Sarah Strohmeyer books in the future!!
