Author Katlyn Duncan discusses where the inspiration for Soul Taken came from and how she balanced the romance and action in the trilogy.
The
inspiration for Soul Taken had come from a random thought where I wondered,
“What would happen if a reaper found herself inside of a human body?” Through
many transformations of the story (none that will see the light of day) I came
through with the start of Maggie’s journey.
Initially
and even up through I submitted the book, there wasn’t much of a romance. In my
mind this book was Maggie’s journey into figuring out her past. And even though
Jackson and Cooper were always present, I never saw a strong romantic element.
That is until I got a suggestion from my editor about her slight obsession with
Jackson and she asked for more of his story. As I delved into that, a new
subplot took place, one that showed me that Maggie was worthy of love, I just
had to decide if and when I wanted to show her that. Maggie, that is. When I
revised the story to what it is today, I did have to find a balance between the
story I set off to tell and the suggestion of the fledgling romance I had
created in my mind. Because I think love has the amazing ability to be a strong
motivator in any direction, whether it is good or evil, which is a dynamic I
wanted to explore.

I've been writing and reading since I can remember. My fondest memories were pushing mom out of the house to get the latest Goosebumps installment. Even though I went to school for biology and currently work in the medical field, I find time to write/read every day.
