Synopsis: Peyton, Sydney's charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion's share of their parents' attention and—lately—concern. When Peyton's increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?
Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.
OUR THOUGHTS: We are HUUUUGE Sarah Dessen fans so we are SUPER excited for her latest coming out in May, SAINT ANYTHING! We think a lot of siblings can relate to feeling as if they have to measure up to another sibling or battling the comparison constantly being made by either themselves or others around them. And especially the idea of feeling invisible to everyone around you; feeling as if they barely hear you let alone know you. SAINT ANYTHING is classic Dessen but with an edgier feel it seems, what with what's going on with Peyton. Sydney seems like she'll be really relatable and we're already loving Chathams! First off, how strange yet cool is his name! Second off, his family owns a pizza parlor and he plays bluegrass AND he actually takes care of his mama! Shoot! If Sydney won't have 'em, we're up for sharing *wink* Looking forward to checking this book out!!
