I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: J.H. Walker

About the Author: J.H. Walker

My life has been rather unconventional. Born insanely curious into an authoritarian, religious family, I know what it’s like to not fit in. My teen years were a struggle, and I remember them in all their intensity. That’s why I like writing for young adults.

I grew up in Central America, surrounded by jungle, and was never too far from the ocean. I observed other cultures, including an indigenous tribe that, at the time, had seen little of the modern world. While there, I slept in a hammock in a bamboo hut, dressed in tribal clothing, and helped bring three babies into the world in at the tender age of fourteen. I survived a hurricane aboard an ocean liner, canoeing through alligator infested waters, P.E., my brother’s pet tarantulas, sky diving, parasailing over the Pacific shoreline, rock climbing, a ropes course blindfolded, and walking barefoot across hot coals. I’m not done having experiences.

I attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, but was so obsessed in my quest to understand human behavior; I left midstream to travel the country and study with people doing groundbreaking work in the field. I’m certified in Ericksonian Hypnosis, am a Master of Neuro-linguistic Programming, and have worked with world-class athletes, including members of the U.S. Ski Team. I’ve completed advanced studies with some of the most brilliant minds of my time in the field of NLP and am a perpetual student of sociology and human behavior.

I live with my photographer husband in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. I’m surrounded by trees. And I will always remain insanely curious.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Dawn Jayne

About the Author: Dawn Jayne
Dawn Jayne is an Urban and Paranormal Fantasy author from Indianapolis, Indiana USA.

Dawn was an avid reader from a young age, and her desire to write took hold soon thereafter. She loaded up on creative writing classes in school, and posted short stories online to hone her skills - and to make certain she had the thick skin necessary to survive the world of publication!

Uprising is Dawn's first novel, but one that has been in her head for most of her life in one form or another. No matter what job she held - from being a Marine to a mother to a veterinary receptionist - she was always hearing voices and spinning tales in her head. Uprising is a blend of fantasy, spirituality, ancient arts and astrology, all woven together while keeping a foundation in the real world.

Her manuscript was accepted by Time and Tide Publishing in 2012, the first in what will be a three book series. She hopes her story will be a positive contribution to the wonderful Urban Fantasy genre, and wants nothing more than her words to bring enjoyment to readers.

About the Author: Meredith Towbin
Meredith Towbin writes dark contemporary young adult fiction. Her first novel, STRAIGHTJACKET, explores teen mental illness.

Before she wrote fiction for teens, she taught them all about English lit in the classroom. Later she edited textbooks and wrote review workbooks for, once again, all those lucky teens.

These experiences, along with her own vivid memories of being an awkward teenager, provide material for her works in progress.

About the Author: Cyndi Tefft

Cyndi Tefft lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest where the weather is overcast and rainy, much like the Highlands of Scotland. So she was right at home when she got the chance to visit Eilean Donan Castle.

A self-proclaimed Scot freak, she loved every bit about the trip to Scotland: the people, the kilts, the accents, the fish & chips, the haggis...well okay, not the haggis.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Gayle C. Krause

About the Author: Gayle C. Krause

I grew up in Scranton, PA, where I entertained my two sisters and all the kids on the block. Storytelling, talent shows and tea parties were everyday activities. Sometimes, after a storm, I led them on jungle safaris through a giant mud puddle beneath overgrown weeds, other times we danced pretend ballet in the backyard, dressed in crinolines. I loved to read and when I wasn’t organizing the neighborhood in some type of fantastical activity I was lost in the fantasy world of books. I knew then I was born to use my imagination to take kids on adventures.

A career as an occupational educator, training prospective Nursery School and Elementary teachers, I passed on my creativity, teaching my students how to inspire their future pupils with imagination. I’ve been known to turn my Pre-K classroom into a pirate ship, a medieval castle and a life size Jumanji board.

My years of teaching account for the two genres of Children’s Literature I write; Picture Books and YA novels. Many of my former students can be found among the pages of my books.

As a child, I made up stories and acted them out for my two sisters and the neighborhood kids. As an adult, I make up stories for kids around the world and hopefully they’ll find themselves mesmerized in my fantasies.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Emma L. Adams

About the Author: Emma L. Adams

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal novels for young adults.

She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma can usually be found in front of her writing desk. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes urban fantasy/supernatural novels for older teens and adults. Her next book, Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Dale Ibitz

About the Author: Dale Ibitz
Author of the YA, science fiction and fantasy series Last Moon Rising

Dale Ibitz was born in Oxford, Connecticut, grew up in the state of Washington, and then re-located back to Connecticut as an adult. Always a lover of books, she spent much of her childhood reading, visiting the library (her best friend’s mother was a librarian…how convenient), and writing. She majored in English at Central Connecticut State University, and while Dale holds a full-time day job where she’s immersed in the dry life of writing contracts, she’s been writing young adult fantasy and mid-grade contemporary for seventeen years (on the side, of course).

Dale’s a fan of hiking and the outdoors, seriously good writing, and she never, ever starts the day without chocolate and coffee (preferably together). Music inspires her, and she likes to listen to alternative metal. When she listens to lyrics, she finds herself imagining stories behind the words…it’s a great writing exercise.

Dale is, by nature, a klutz and has years of funny tidbits of real-life comical events which she (ahem) constantly seems to stumble in to. These tidbits have a habit of finding their way on to the pages of the books she writes, injecting a little humor to her writing.

If you were to visit Dale’s house, you'd meet her husband, 2 kids, their dog Lea (most people simply refer to her as The Beast...and for good reason), their kitten Luna (affectionately known as Loony Luna), a gaggle of ducks, and a flock of hens ruled by a tyrannical rooster they call The Stump, or Stumpy. How he got his name is a long story...maybe she’ll tell you sometime.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Wendy Knight

About the Author: Wendy Knight
Author of YA paranormal and fantasy romance FEUDLINGS by Astraea Press
Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heel for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

I HEART YA: Featured Author Spotlight: Brian Rathbone

About the Author: Brian Rathbone
I was born in the garden part of The Garden State, far from the New Jersey seen in the Sopranos. Farm life shaded my perceptions, and old-world knowledge seemed to separate me from my peers, or perhaps it was the ever-present smell of horse manure. Though I obtained a certain level of skill working with horses, I somehow knew my life would take a different path. Corporate America called to me. I imagined it would be better to work in an air-conditioned office than in the fields or on the racetrack. I started in the mailroom and worked every day to learn new skills and advance my position. I got lucky, and some wonderful people gave me the chance to prove my worth, but as I climbed higher and higher on the corporate ladder, I came to see that the machine was broken. The day I read the daily Dilbert and realized that Scott Adams had landed one squarely on my forehead, I knew I had to make some changes. I started working from home and finally found the time to write down the story that had been growing in my mind for over a decade. At times I felt like a juggler in motley while I balanced the writing of code and the writing of fiction, but it’s all been worthwhile. And now I don my tinfoil cap and wander into a new adventure. There’s room for one more if you’d like to come along.
