Why I LOVE Paranormal Romance Fiction!
Kaitlyn Davis, author of the Midnight Fire Series, opens up
about what drives her obsession for young adult paranormal romance and why she
decided to write in the genre.
Which sounds more
interesting?
1) Girl meets boy. Girl and
boy play an elaborate game of cat and mouse for 300 pages. Boy and girl live
happily ever after.
OR
2) Girl meets boy. Girl and
boy play an elaborate game of cat and mouse that includes world-ending high
stakes, ridiculously awesome supernatural powers, post-apocalyptic scenarios
and what-the-F-just-happened-I-am-dying cliffhangers. Boy and girl live happily
ever after.
Is this even a choice?
Obviously scenario number two! And that about sums up why I LOVE paranormal and
dystopian romance. At their bases, contemporary romance and paranormal romance
aren’t that different. Both genres tell stories about growing up, facing
losses, overcoming challenges, and finding yourself and maybe even love along
the way. But, paranormal romance does this with so much more gusto—everything
is bigger! The stakes are higher, the story lines are sweeping, the powers are
unlike anything on this earth, and I love getting lost in those sorts of
fantasy worlds.
And like I’ll tell
everyone, I can pinpoint where my obsession began with a little show called Buffy
The Vampire Slayer (come on, you know you love it too!). While my
friends were gossiping about One Tree Hill, I was gobbling down
every episode I could find about Buffy and her Scooby gang. And the whole time,
I kept asking myself: Who cares about basketball games when a hell mouth is
opening in the library? Who wants to watch cheerleaders when you can watch the
slayer kick some vampire ass? And who can possibly long for Chad Michael Murray
when the dark, brooding, mysterious Angel is in the picture? Definitely not me!
And because I couldn’t find
any other television shows that pulled at my heartstrings the same way, I
turned to books. Meg Cabot’s Mediator Series was one of the
first books I read that really grabbed my attention and kept me reading way
past my bedtime with a flashlight under my covers. Tamora Pierce’s Alanna
Series came next and I adored Marianne Curley’s Guardians of
Time Series.
Basically, by the time Twilight came around,
I was already neck-deep in a paranormal obsession and ready to just keep it
going! And I love that the rest of the world has finally joined me (and all of
you guys like me!) and has seen these young adult books for the amazing
adventures they are.
For as long as I can
remember, I’ve not only devoured these stories, but dreamed of writing
them—dreamed of creating characters people love, stories that make readers gasp
in shock, and worlds with stakes so high they’d be hanging out with the moon. And
I think I have created that with my Midnight Fire Series.
But no matter what, I’ll
spend the rest of my life writing and hoping that one day one of my books might
be the catalyst that sends some unsuspecting reader down the paranormal rabbit
hole! After all, I need some company down here ;)
