I
Choose You (Friends and Lovers Series, #2)
Author:
Bethany Lopez
Synopsis: Up until now, Nicole's life has been mapped out for her. She'd go to college,
marry Jake and become the upstanding minister's wife. When she leaves that life
to begin again in a small town in Texas, she finally has the freedom to live as
she chooses. There, she meets Kent, a guy whose charm and passion make it hard
to stick to her morals.
Dodging his father’s fists and protecting his twin sister made Kent into the man he is today. He learned by watching his mother stay by his father’s side that it’s better to keep relationships simple. Then he meets Nicole. Her sweet smile and genuine response to him land like punches to his resolve. After a lifetime of learning to protect his heart, can he finally let down his guard?

Review: Okay,
so by the synopsis, this book had major potential for me. I liked that Kent had
a troubled past which caused him to become the man he is today, because he was
smart enough to know that life doesn’t have to be lived the way his parents
lived it. I liked how Nicole was brave enough to stand up to her parents and go
down a lonely road--but a road all her own instead of following their demands. I was
also really drawn to the fact that, these two seemingly opposite characters, were
trying to defeat all odds to be together.
But this book was a HUGE disappointment.
Nicole is supposed to be a good little Christian girl. She has been involved in church her whole life, she has strong Christian values,
like not having sex until marriage, which is essentially the whole plot of the
book, and she's kind and sweet and just perfect all the way around. Everyone
just LOVES Nicole. But I found her mucho annoying. I understand that Nicole is
young and works in a bar and wants to have fun in life, but she drinks a lot for
the good little Christian she tries to paint herself as. Then, now brace
yourselves for this one folks, she's NEVER had sex, has only ever had ONE
boyfriend and made it perfectly clear to Kent that sex is off the table. So
when Kent starts to pull back because he's used to having sex and was really
looking forward to having it with Nicole, and is unsure how to act around her
anymore, Nicole starts to get suspicious and worries that Kent isn't into her
anymore. So what does she do? She corners Kent on his bed and pretty much says,
"We can do other stuff besides
sex." And she does other stuff
in front of him! I'm sorry, but a virgin with little to no experience with men
doesn't just all of the sudden know how to do OTHER stuff and gets all hot and
sweaty without a single thought of hesitation! It's just not BELIEVABLE! I
walked away from the book at that point. And if I have to read about how
wonderful her curves were one more time, I was going lose it!! Nicole is hot and we
should all bow down to her, WE. GET. IT! But this book was a HUGE disappointment.
Three days later, I came back to the book and wanted to beat Kent senseless. Nicole's family is having a party and Nicole invites Kent along. Now, Kent is supposed to be over confident and very sure of who he is. He's lived a rough life and doesn't back down from any challenge. He's a hard worker and takes pride that he already owns his own home. I really thought Kent was cool people but then he met her family and suddenly the Kent I fell in like with turns out to be a big cry baby. He sees the type of life Nicole grew up in and because it’s the polar opposite of the way he grew up, he's going to run out of the house and when Nicole chases after him, he breaks up with her! She just gave him OTHER stuff and he breaks up with her! The jackass! And then he leaves her and Nicole has to hitch a ride from her ex-boyfriend. Can you say awkward?
There are a few supporting characters that had promise. Rich was funny and I liked how he teases Roni, but by the built up of their relationship (or lack thereof) it's pretty predictable that they will end up together in the next book. And fans of the first book in the Friends and Lovers Series will get to see Bree and Colin, who are living their happily ever after.
Also, there were points in the book that I wished they would just stop talking. Just stop. The dialogue was so cheesy and unnatural that I had a constant eye roll going on. This book was so unbelievable and ridiculously filled with so many clichés and character actions that made absolutely no sense that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Unless of course, your into that kinda thing. And by that kinda thing, I mean banging your head on a wall.
Over all, the only two things I liked about this book were the short page count and the cover. But like they say, don't choose a book by its cover, right?
