6-10 Summary: Sydney is surprised to see that Ms. T
isn't in class and takes the opportunity to get an early start to Santa Barbara
to look for Marcus Finch since Adrian is still out of town and she doesn’t want
to search for the young witches without him. She takes along some Alchemist
supplies and charms she made with magic to help her in her quest. When she gets
to Santa Barbara, she finds Marcus apartment building that matches the
description from her scying vision. She gets the help from a young boy who
tells her that Marcus now goes by the name Dave and tells her which apartment
he’s in. After knocking on the door and getting no answer, she decides to climb
up the rickety fire escape that would be better suited as scrap metal than an
emergency escape and breaks through the window and tumbles into Marcus'
apartment. Only when she's convinced Marcus isn't home does he surprise her by
jumping out of the closet and punches her in the face. They fight a few minutes
and when she calls him by his name and Marcus finally gets a good look at her,
she's shocked when he sees that he knows who she is and has been looking for
her too. But she's even more shocked when someone points a gun to the back of
her head and orders her to get off of Marcus. The woman holding Sydney at
gunpoint is Sabrina, who works undercover at the Warriors of Light
organization.
When Sydney had
first encountered Sabrina (when Sydney had to rescue Sonya), she was undercover
and working a mission. Marcus refuses to be forthcoming about what he knows
about the Alchemist and what happened to make him go rogue until he’s certain
Sydney is willing to really them out and possibly break her lily tattoo. In the
meantime, Sydney takes Marcus to meet Adrian since she needs his help healing
Marcus’s wrist from when they had fought. When they get to Clearance's house,
one look at Sydney's face from where Marcus hit her and Adrian goes into attack
mode. The two men fight until Sydney breaks it up. She goes with Adrian into
his bedroom (“You know under normal
circumstances, you inviting me into the bedroom would have been the highlight
of my day”—Adrian to Sydney) and explains the situation with Marcus and
about Ms. T’s sister being after young witches. Adrian is upset that a witch
would be after Sydney and agrees to help her on the condition that she lets him
heal her face. Sydney instantly freaks out, not wanting Adrian’s spirit magic
anywhere near her. But Adrian holds firm and says that's his price for helping
her, so Sydney reluctantly agrees to let Adrian use magic on her.
The next
morning, Sydney is woken by Angeline who tells her that she is failing math and
needs a tutor. This is unwelcomed news to Sydney who has enough to deal with
then worrying about Angeline being kicked out of Amberwood, but since that will
mean she’ll be done one person to protect Jill, Sydney agrees to help and asks
Trey to tutor her. Trey refuses at first
because he doesn’t want to get beaten up by Angeline but Sydney assures him
everything will be fine so he agrees to help. When Sydney tells Eddie and
Angeline about Trey, Eddie suggests that Sydney should be more cautious when it
comes to Trey, and even though Sydney assures him that Trey is her friend, she is
still wonders when the rift between them will rear its ugly head. Ms. T also
gives Sydney the list of six young girls who are witches that she believes her
sister may go after. Sydney tells her that she will get started on the weekend
and Ms. T tells her not to hesitate to use the hours of her independent study
during the school days to search for the young witches to have more time to
warn them.
Later that
afternoon, Adrian picks Sydney up at Amberwood and they start on the list of
girls Ms. T gave Sydney. They arrive at the bed and breakfast from Sydney's
locating scry vision of where she saw Ms. T's sister. Adrian and Sydney pretend
to be a couple (Jett and Taylor) who are interested in a room so they can try
to find Veronica, and after a hilarious show put on by Adrian, they are
disappointed to learn that Veronica had left the B&B the day before. They
decide to warn one of the girls on the list, Wendy, on their way back to
Amberwood since she’s close by. When Sydney and Adrian arrive at Wendy's dorm,
Wendy tells them that she doesn't want anything to do with magic and tries to
shut her door on them. Sydney manages to convince Wendy to hear them out, and
reluctantly and very cautiously, Wendy listens to Sydney's warning, but
suddenly thinks Adrian is about to do something to her and points pepper spray
at him. Sydney jumps in front of him and casts a spell for a bright light so
Wendy won't hurt Adrian and Wendy forces them out of her home. Sydney hurriedly
gives her a protection charm and together Adrian and her leave. Adrian teases
Sydney about liking him just a little bit because she threw herself in the line
of fire to protect him.
The next morning
Sydney explains everything that happened with Wendy and missing Veronica by a
day. Ms. T tells Sydney she wants to show her a spell and they go to her home
where Ms. T performs a powerful spell to try to touch Veronica’s mind. The spell
fails and they agree to wait until the
next full moon to try another scrying spell to find Veronica. Ms T tells her to
continue warning the girls on the list in hopes it will slow Veronica down and
to continue studying the protection spells. Marcus texts Sydney to meet him at
an arcade and Sydney decides to use the opportunity to drill Marcus for
answers. He tells her that he left the Alchemists for a Moroi girl he had
befriended. When other Alchemists started giving him a lot of unwelcome
attention for it, it was around the same time he heard rumors about the
Alchemists holding Moroi against their will and about some Alchemists even
interacting with the Warriors of Light. He also discloses that his group has
found out several other dark secrets about the Alchemists and are searching for
the way those secrets connect them with the Warriors of Light. Marcus wants
Sydney’s help to figure what the link is between both groups. But Sydney isn't
sure she wants to help him or if she even trusts him (let alone break her
tattoo) when barely knows anything about him. Marcus wants her to meet the
other people in his group and hear their stories. Sydney is weary and says that
she will only go on the condition that she's allowed to take Eddie with her to
make her feel a little safer.
Bridget's thoughts: Chapters 6 through 10 were so GOOOOOOD! I
honestly didn't think I could love Adrian anymore then I already did, but then
he just had to attack Marcus for hitting Sydney and I almost lost it in giggle
fits. Adrian is such a bad ass! I laughed so hard during the Santa Barbara
scene when Sydney was searching for Marcus and how she didn’t want to touch
anything in the apartment building and then bravely climbed the hazardous fire
escape because she wasn't letting anything stand in her way to get to Marcus.
She's my new hero! Marcus was not who I was expecting at all, he's funny and
flirty and eager for Sydney's help. I was also surprised to learn that he's not
the only one who has broken the Alchemist tattoo. Trent made me laugh with
almost everything he said but I can't help but think he's up to something that
will bring more danger to Sydney, either intentional or not.
Annabell’s Thoughts: When I didn’t think I could fall for Adrian any
more than I already had, he just keeps getting better and better! *giggle* The
reason I love Sydney’s character is because she questions everything around
her. She doesn’t just trust stupidly and has the courage to stand against not
just her enemies but her friends if she thinks they are doing wrong. Plus,
she’s just so nerdy it’s awesome! I love a female character who is INTELLIGENT
and STRONG! She doesn’t value a person’s beauty because of his/her face but for
who he/she is. Marcus is charming and ballsy. I also like Sabrina. That chick
definitely has feisty edge to her! I’d hire her as my bodyguard *wink* Sydney
is starting to show her feelings a little more for Adrian and he has a lot of
fun throwing them in her face which is fun to read. I can’t wait to see what
happens with the secret meeting with Marcus and his crew and Sydney and Eddie
that’s coming up! I wonder if Adrian will find a way to sneak in lol. Suspense
is building with the young witches Ms. T is trying to protect. Can’t wait to
see what Ms. T’s sister is really like. I’m definitely excited to see Sydney
finally admit her feelings to Adrian! *swoon*
