The Indigo Spell

With Marcus's help, Sydney realizes that the group she's been loyal to her whole life has been hiding the truth from her. Is it possible that her golden lily tattoo might have more power over her than she thinks?

As she struggles to come to terms with what that might mean, Sydney is compelled to use her growing magical powers to track down an evil magic user who is targeting powerful young witches Using magic goes against everything she always thought she believed, but she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her special blood--or else she might be next.

Recap: Sydney tells Ms. T and Adrian about her dream and Ms. T fears that Veronica has found Sydney. She tells Sydney that Sydney's best chance now is to practice defense and suggests that Sydney find some more basic means of offense--meaning knives and guns--Sydney protests at first, but after listening to Adrian's reasoning she agrees. Sydney asks Adrian if he has her cross necklace--the one that broke from around her neck in the Bed and Breakfast while kissing Adrian--and sadly, Adrian does not have it. Adrian takes Sydney to Malachi Wolfe and after Sydney displays her skills with firearms, he agrees to let her borrow a gun. With a new form of protection in Sydney's possession, Adrian drops her off at Amberwood, but before she gets out of the car, Adrian gives her a gift--a new wooden cross necklace to replace the one she lost. Later that night, when Sydney is trying not to fall asleep, in fear Veronica will get in her dreams again, she falls asleep anyways and is dropped into a Spirit dream. Adrian tells Sydney in the dream that if he is controlling her dreams, then hopefully Veronica won't be able to get into her head again. But Sydney is concerned that using so much Spirit will cause Adrian more harm to himself, but Adrian is determined to keep Sydney safe, in any means necessary.

Sydney meets Jill, Eddy, and Angeline for breakfast. She's happy to sit with them and catch up with what their little group has been up to lately, seeing as how she's hardly spent any time with them. Eddy lets it be known that he doesn't like the new guys who have been hanging around Jill because he thinks they have ulterior motives and Eddy doesn’t want Jill getting caught up in another human-Moroi relationship. Angeline is too engrossed in her math book to pay attention and Trey comes up to the table and it seems like he's flirting with her. Ms. T isn't in her morning class and Sydney is very worried. It isn't until later in the afternoon that Sydney finally sees Ms. T and Ms. T tells Sydney that Veronica has attacked a member of her coven. Sydney is more concerned now--more so for Ms. T's safety then her own--and worries that Veronica will come after own sister. Ms. T argues that Veronica won't face her unless she's absolutely forced to. Ms. T gives Sydney instructions to try out a few new spells on her own. Sydney takes Adrian with her to a secluded spot in a park and Sydney casts a spell. Neither of them knew what the end result was going to be of the spell Ms. T gave Sydney and horrified when the spell made a small crystalline dragon. Sydney and Adrian both have a moment and finally Adrian--being brave and manly--scoops the dragon up into a picnic basket and they take it to Pies and Stuff to feed it. Sydney calls Ms. T and the woman tells Sydney that she didn't create a dragon, she summoned a demon. A demon who attaches itself and is loyal to the first person it sees. Which in this case, were Sydney and Adrian.

Adrian "lets" Sydney take their little dragon to her dorm. He tells her that he will take weekend visitations and she mentions about what she's going to do with the dragon when she goes to Mexico to get her tattoo sealed. It's the first time Adrian is hearing of the Mexico trip and Sydney explains it to him. Adrian is upset and they end up getting into a fight. Sydney tells him that physical attraction isn't the same as love and Adrian becomes hurt. He tells her that they have been through too much together and that underneath all her logic and superstition, he knows she loves him too. Sydney storms away to her dorm and Jill comes by later on to admire the little dragon. Later that night, Adrian pulls Sydney into  another Spirit dream. Adrian is drunk and Sydney doesn't know if she should feel guilty or annoyed. Adrian apologizes to Sydney and tells her that if she needs to go off to Mexico, that he will understand and that whatever she needs to do to break her tattoo--or not break her tattoo--he will support her.

Mission St. Louis is in full swing. Sydney arrives in St. Louis in a mini dress that did to Ian just what Adrian said it would. It didn't take much convincing for Ian to agree to get Sydney into the archives where he works. The two of them go to evening service and Sydney runs into her father and younger sister Zoe. Sydney is worried that her sister isn't going to talk to her and Ian invites Sydney's family to sit with them through the service. When the service is over, Zoe talks to Sydney and even gives her a hug and tells her that she misses her. Sydney is really happy and promises to see her younger sister soon. Later that night, Adrian visits Sydney in her dreams again and Sydney fills Adrian in on everything that has happened so far, but mainly gushes about Zoe. Adrian is happy for Sydney and leaves her dreams early and wishes her good luck for her mission in the morning.

Like promised, Ian takes Sydney to the facility early the next morning. After a security check, Ian finally gets Sydney into the archives. Ian leaves Sydney--who is mesmerized by all the history books--to catch up on a few things and tells her that he will be back to collect her in an hour. Sydney seizes the opportunity and pretends that she needs to use the restroom. She casts an invisibility spell on herself and sneaks down to the operations level.  After a weird mix of luck and logic, Sydney makes it into a room of computers, set up just as Wade had described. Once Sydney retrieves what she needed, she hurries back to the archives room and Ian drives her back to the airport. Once on the plane, Sydney opens the file on her laptop and sees the proof that the Alchemists and Warriors are working together. Once again, Sydney has been lied to by the very people who raised her.

Bridget's Thoughts: WOW so much happened in these five chapters! Once again, Sydney is such a badass! Only Sydney can pull off gun singling, dragon summoning, and espionage and go on about her life like it's no big deal. Though, I did want to strangle her a bit when her and Adrian got into their argument and she told him that she thought she was just another notch on his belt. Really, Sydney? Really? Can she just get over herself already and admit the smoking hot romance between them? UGH! I'm not sure how much more I can take! I did however feel very happy for Sydney and Zoe and I'm glad that those two seem to be moving forward with their relationship. There are only five more chapters left and I. Can't. Wait. To see what happens. Is Sydney going to go through with breaking her tattoo. IS she FINALLY going to admit loving Adrian?  Is she going to get into trouble with the Alchemists and be sent away to re-education? So many questions!!

Annabell's Thoughts: These chapters were a lot of fun! Sydney is definitely an awesome character. She is assertive, strong-willed, intelligent  and brave. When she busted out being able to load and shoot the gun Wolfe gave her without hesitation was awesome! One of my favorite moments with Sydney. The scene where the mini demon (Sydney refuses to call it a demon so she calls it dragon) was really funny! I like that Adriana and Sydney share custody of it since the demon/dragon bonded with both of them. The dinner with Ian and Sydney had me cracking up. Ian is so easily swayed and I was proud Sydney managed to stay confidant and stick to the plan despite how anxious and scared she was to get caught. Sydney finding the connection between the Alchemists and the Warriors of Light was a BIG moment!! It changes everything she's believed and challenges Sydney to figure out how to confront the Alchemists and possibly change the way they work forever. I just hope Sydney finally gets it together to admit her darn feelings for Adrian before she gets found out by the Alchemists!! Her constant denial has gotten ridiculous and I agree with Adrian when he tells Sydney she seriously can't be in THAT MUCH self-denial?!

Favorites Quotes

"I think beating you just improved your opinion of me more than anything else I've ever done." ~Adrian (to Sydney after beating her at a game of Monopoly)

"Maybe you're graduating from fireballs to lightning bolts. I bet it'd be a lot like throwing ninja stars. Except, well, you could incinerate people." ~Adrian (about Sydney's magical training)

"First, I don't have a list. Second, if I did have a list, I could find someone a hell of lot less frustrating to add to it. And finally, I know that you know you're no conquest, so don't act like you seriously think that. You and I have been through too much together. We're too close, too connected. I wasn't that crazy on spirit when I said you're my flame in the dark. We chase away the shadows around each other. Our backgrounds don't matter. What we have is bigger than that. I love you, and beneath all that logic, calculation, and superstition, I know you love me too. Running away to Mexico and fleeing all your problems isn't going to change that. You're just going to end up scared and confused." ~Adrian

Discussion Questions

Do you think someone inside the Alchemist compound still managed to see Sydney sneaking in despite the fact that she used an invisibility spell? Do you think the Alchemists may be onto her already?

Would you want to have a pet demon/dragon that was formed from a rock? What would you name it?
