Synopsis: Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

BREAKDOWN: The Darkest Part of the Forest tells the story of a small town called Fairfold where humans and fairies tentatively co-exist. There are rules the people of Fairfold have learned to follow over the years to make sure they stay on the fairies good side—always be polite, always do what they ask you unless it contradicts other rules, don’t thank them, don’t eat their food, don’t sing unless you really can, never dance, never brag, and most importantly, don’t venture into the forest alone, at night. Tourists tend to disappear or end up dead but the people of Fairfold don’t even bat an eye. If a tourist disappears or ends up dead in a ditch, it’s their own doing; they must have broken a rule. In the middle of the forest, is a casket where a horned boy sleeps. It’s whispered he is a fairy prince under a curse but no one really knows where he came from or how he got in the casket. No one has ever been able to wake him. Enter Ben and Hazel who are brother and sister. They have lived in Fairfold their whole lives and they have spent countless hours and nights—like so many in Fairfold—talking to the sleeping horned fairy, telling him their dreams and desires, insecurities and fears, secrets they never want anyone else to know.

Since they were kids, Ben and Hazel have acted as knights, chasing down fairies who do evil and finding missing tourists. Ben has an incredibly beautiful talent of playing music, any instrument he touches, he can master. Hazel is brave and fierce. She can wield a sword and follow tracks. Together, they use their gifts to make sure the fairies in the forest stay in check.

When Ben is accepted into a prestigious school but can't afford going, Hazel does the only thing she can think of, she makes a bargain with the fairies. Something everyone in Fairfold knows NEVER to do. But things don't go according to plan. Ben and Hazel get swept up into a battle that is brewing in Fairfold. A battle that involves the horned boy in the casket, an Alderking who is determined to have his way, a monster hidden in the forest that is attacking Fairfold, and Hazel and Ben may be the only ones who can save the town.

Review: There are those moments where you start a book and you know in your gut, it’s going to be an EXPERIENCE. The book is going to take you on a journey and by the end of it, you’re going to be left feeling like it was the best adventure of your life. The Darkest Part of the Forest was such a book for me.

The world building is lush and vivid and memorizing and terrifying. Part of me wanted to live in Fairfold. I wanted to be walk through the forest and discover fairies of all kinds and see what they could do. I wanted to sneak off to the casket where the fairy prince slept and tell him all my innermost secrets. The other part of me wanted to run like hell in the other direction. Fairies in Fairfold are NO JOKE. They play for keeps and they love the dark. Once a bargain is struck or a rule is broken, they will come for you. The town of Fairfold was a character all it's own. It took on life, breathing magic into the pages and enfolding you in it's beauty and terror.

The characters were wonderfully diverse and wonderfully well-built. Hazel was my FAVORITE. She is wild and fierce and bold. Hazel willingly runs into the dark to face evil fairies and save those taken or avenge the ones who have been lost. Although Hazel is strong, she keeps herself VERY guarded. She doesn't let people get close to her, doesn't allow her heart to really open to anyone (outside of her brother Ben but even with him she keeps secrets). Hazel carries the weight of having to be a hero for her family, for her brother, for herself. I liked the mixture of Hazel's strengths and weaknesses. She grows as the story unfolds and learns to connect with her vulnerability and let people see it. She learns to better accept herself. I loved that!

Ben is adorable. He's completely accepting of his sister and never judges her. He has a hopeless romantic soul and a heart opened to anyone. He's easy to get along with, easy to trust and build a friendship with. He has a gift for music that is terrifying and beautiful. Ben is afraid of his musical gift even to the point where he's willing to break his own fingers. He is the dreamer and has a softer heart than Hazel.

Severin, the horned boy in the casket, is dangerous and lethal and DELICIOUS. Oh goodness, he's a bad boy if there ever was one and he will make your heart go all swoony while making your feet want to run in the opposite direction. There's no denying he's a fairy with a strength and power all his own and he has his own agenda for Fairfold.

There are some heavy themes addressed in the book: violent scenes, dead bodies, trickery and cruelty, and neglected parenting. Hazel and Ben's parents weren't exactly great parents growing up. They often left the kids unattended, hungry, and to fend for themselves. It's something that helped Ben and Hazel connect more deeply and learn to survive. I thought it was handled with just the right touch. It wasn't overly dramatic or dragged on or setup in a way to pity Hazel and Ben but used as a way to show how Ben and Hazel found a way to not only forge a better life but forgive and build better relationships with their parents.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the Darkest Part of the Forest! It is a book I will more than happily read again and again. It will sit on my To Be Treasured For Life shelf. It was a story I just couldn't stop devouring and I was enthralled from the beginning to end.

Anyone who is a fan of Holly Black, who loves stories filled with magic and fairies, who loves the fantasy genre will not be disappointed!

Definitely go grab a copy for yourself!

Check out the first two books in the series as well, FALLING KINGDOMS & REBEL SPRING!

Synopsis: Prince Magnus has just witnessed torture, death, and miracles during the bloody confrontation that decimated the rebel forces. Now he must choose between family and justice as his father, the cruel King Gaius, sets out to conquer all of Mytica. All Gaius needs now are the Kindred—the four elemental crystals that give godlike powers to their owner. But the King of Blood is not the only one hunting for this ancient, storied magic. . . .

THE KRAESHIANS join the hunt. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the wealthy kingdom across the Silver Sea, charm and manipulate their way to the Kindred, proving to be more ruthless than perhaps even the King of Blood himself.

THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo and vengeful Jonas lead them, slaying with sweetness, skill, and a secret that can control Lucia’s overpowering magic—all so they can use the Kindred to win back their fallen kingdoms.

THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally in the flesh with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia’s powers to unveil the Kindred.

The only certainty in these dark times is that whoever finds the magic first will control the fate of Mytica. . . . but the four element gods of the Kindred have other plans.

OUR THOUGHTS: If there is a book we have been waiting ALL YEAR to get our nerdy hands on, it's the third installment to the AMAZING Falling Kingdoms Series!! *jump around and giggling with hysteria while hugging book* The battles, the romance, the magic, we love it all and cannot wait to see where the next installment goes!

Michael Week: Book Review: Michael (Sons of Old Trilogy, #2)!

Michael (Sons of Old Trilogy, #2)

Add on Goodreads!

Purchase on Barnes & Noble and Amazon!

Genre: YA/NA Urban Fantasy, Supernatural, Paranormal

Publication: May 28, 2014

Cover Designed by Hot Damn Designs

Synopsis: Zahara Faraday looks like a normal eighteen-year-old and lives in a quiet neighborhood with her overprotective parents. She works at a bookstore and hangs out with her best friend Becca King on a daily basis. But underneath the normal lies a secret life filled with dangerous supernaturals. Zahara belongs to a world made of Light Witches, rogue Imagoes (supernatural creatures with super strength, speed, and silver skin when the moon is out), fallen angels, and Nephilim (hybrid children born half-human, half-angel). Where her father Solomon Faraday is human, her mother Mia and her Aunt Catalina are Light Witches. They help protect the human world by hunting down rogue supernaturals who commit heinous acts against humans. What they never expected was the possibility of having to hunt down the one rogue coven they had befriended and come to trust in their battle against Lucifer. Rekesh Saint-Louis is the leader of the most powerful Imago coven in Florida and now he’s the most suspected. Supernatural bodies are starting to pile up with an ancient ritual long forbade being used to murder them and the symbol, one large cross with four smaller crosses around it—which represents Rekesh’s coven— being left behind. Rekesh and the Elders of his coven set out to find who is behind the murders and clearing his name before a war between the covens begins. To make matters more difficult, Rekesh also has to deal with the return of someone he has been keeping a secret.

Meanwhile, Zahara and Becca are spending more time brushing up on their training, knowing an attack from Lucifer can come at any moment. Between patrolling neighborhoods and hanging at the boarding school created by Charles Stephens—a fallen angel who created the school to protect the children of rogue supernaturals—they are thrown into one battle after another. Zahara begins to develop a closer bond with Jason as they train and chase down clues to clear Rekesh’s name. What she doesn’t know is the very powerful secret Jason is keeping; a secret that will change the course of the fight with Lucifer.

But Rekesh’s coven being set up isn’t the only danger. A new powerful and lethal drug has emerged from the shadows of the supernatural world called Inferi. The drug has two deadly side effects: it leaves the supernatural hungering for blood—both human and supernatural—and grants them the elemental power they had once possessed.

Lucifer is on the move and he will stop at nothing to get his hands on Zahara and complete the first act of his plan.

A battle is about to begin.

One that may cost the Faraday family everything they hold dear.

Full Disclosure: I read this book before anyone else so nanna nanna boo boo!

Review: Michael starts off right where Lucifer left off. With Zahara and Co. doing everything they can to resume a somewhat normal life after the devastating realization that Lucifer is top side and hell bent on using Zahara in his master plan to take over God’s green earth. Zahara and Becca buy an apartment, are looking forward to college, and most importantly, upping up their slaying game. If Lucifer thinks he’s coming around again, he better think twice.
But--yes, there’s a but, Zahara and Co. aren’t the only ones looking to seek and destroy the big bad from down stairs. The Archangel Michael (yes, that Michael) is on a mission of his own. The only catch? He has to step into a certain Nephilim to do so. So now we have an Archangel secretly hitching a ride in a Nephilim, Lucifer who is posing as Zahara’s angel boy sudo love interest, and a slew of deep dark secrets that are sure to get the blood pumpin’ and keep you up at all hours of the night to figure them all out.
And that’s not all folks…
There is also a crazy on the loose murdering members of powerful Imago families and taking their souls, leaving just enough evidence behind to pin the crimes on our favorite Imago leader, Rekesh Saint-Louis. Is he innocent or guilty? That . . . is a very good question. One you’ll have to read the book to find out the answer to. *cue manic laughter*
Speaking of hawt Imago’s, Cadiz has definitely raised the bar in this installment of the Sons of Old Trilogy. Shirtless Imago’s, tattooed Nephilim, smart mouthed rogues, oh, my! OH. MY. Four words: Leanian. Without. A. Shirt. I just… I can’t even.
Now brace yourselves I’m about to get all gushy on you. When Cadiz first sent me the final draft of Michael I knew, knew from the very first chapter that this was going to be the best thing I have ever read from her. I can’t tell you guys how many times she would call or text me saying that she was beating her head on the metaphorical wall. Or how many ideas we came up with during our many many brain storming conversations that morphed into some of the scenes come to life in this book. Or how many times I called her after reading a scene to ask her why she insists on torturing me so sweetly and also to ask what the hell is going on in her head because Michael is a bit dark and twisty (you’ll get what I’m talking about when you read it for yourself). So you can all understand why I am beaming with pride for my bestie because not only did she step up to the plate in making Michael better than Lucifer, she knocked it out of the park.
Over all, I have never recommended a book so hard in the history of TeamNerd. Acton, suspense, loyalties being tested and broken, twists and turns, and an ending that will have everyone reeling, Michael is for sure to make everyone’s top book of the year. Oh, and speaking of endings, brace yourselves guys, it’s a doozy and hands down my favorite part of the whole book. Just when you think that Zahara has been through enough, bam! Cadiz throws in another asteroid sized curve ball and oh, the feels. Without giving too much away, I will just tell you that another angel has made himself known and he has major plans for Zahara. Soul shattering plans.

Top Ten Monday: Why You MUST watch Austenland & Top Favorite Quotes!

If you have never heard of the book Austenland by Shannon Hale or the movie that came out just last Monday then you are DEFINITELY missing out on one hell of a good time!

The story follows Jane Hayes, a woman OBSESSED TO THE EXTREME with Jane Austen and particularly, Mr. Darcy. She empties her bank account to attend Austenland, a place where fans of Jane Austen can go to be whisked away into the period life Jane lived in. Jane Hayes befriends another American named Elizabeth Charming who has no idea who in the world Jane Austen actually is. Then there are the two hot studs--Henry Nobley and Martin. While Martin seems to be totally into Jane, Henry seems to find the entire experience incredibly annoying. Add to the mix Amelia Heartwright, a young British girl with more quirks than Charming, and Captain East who will find any excuse to rip off his shirt and show off his six pack abs. And of course, there's Mrs. Wattlesbrook, the woman in charge and who seems to have it out for Jane and Colonel Andrews who acts as ridiculous as Charming. Austenland is seriously one of the best movies to get together with all your girlfriends, a tea set, some tasty desserts and have a night full of roll-on-the-floor-from-laughter, fun time!

TOP TEN REASONS YOU SHOULD WATCH

10. Fan of Jane Austen--If you are a fan of Jane Austen and Mr. Darcy and the other remakes that have been done in the past (particularly the one with Colin Firth *swoon*) then you will DEFINITELY love watching Austenland! The movie leans more toward humor than romantic and everything is grand and over the top but it just makes the movie that much more entertaining.

9. England--England as a backdrop is GORGEOUS. The landscapes and the big house everyone stays in is beautiful! It'll make you want to take a trip out there yourself!

8. The Costumes & Decor & Hairstyles--The costumes are really well-crafted and every scene is set up really well. The dresses range from outlandish to I-would-totes-wear-that-one! I really liked the outfit Jane had on when she was on the horse. It's a small brown jacket with buttons out of the front and a bow (if I'm remembering correctly) with a dress in white and brown stripes. Jennifer Coolidge's character, Elizabeth Charming, had a great fuchsia-colored dress in the Aphrodite number she played with long, red tresses. It was awesome! Jane's hair was spot on Kiera Knightly from her remake of Pride & Prejudice.

7. Script--There are SO MANY pieces of dialogue or one-liners that will have you roaring with laughter! The facial expressions each actor attaches to how they deliver the lines is what will really do you in, especially when it came to J.J. Feild who plays Henry Nobley. I LOVED the looks he would give!! Every conversation flowed nicely and every transition from scene to scene was nicely done. The humor and romance was really well-balanced.

6. Kerri Russell Singing Hot In Here--There's this SPECTACULAR scene where Kerri Russell's character, Jane, is forced to play the piano by Mrs. Wattlesbrook. Jane only knows how to play one song, Hot In Here by Nelly. She starts off really reluctant and sort of embarrassed then starts getting all into the song and really going at it. It was one of the BEST scenes in the movie!

5. Mr. Nobley Ripping Jane's Dress--Yes, you read that correctly and no, it's not what you're thinking! Get your mind out of the gutter! There's a lovely scene where Jane gets stuck walking back in the rain (very much Kiera Knightly in Pride & Prejudice) and Mr. Nobley comes riding up on his horse to help her. He lifts Jane to put her on the horse and tells her she has to straddle the horse if they're going to out run the rain with both of them on the horse. But Jane can't straddle the horse because the dress she's wearing would let her. So Mr. Nobley does the only thing he can: he rips her dress then jumps on the back of the horse, wraps his arms around her and rides off. *swoon*

4. The Soundtrack--The 80's theme music throughout the movie was soooooo goooood!! I was totes jamming along with the movie *hehe* The music fit perfectly with every scene and added to the mood and tone of the story. So MUST buy the soundtrack!

3. The Cast--Kerri Russell as Jane, J.J. Feild as Mr. Nobley, Bret McKenzie as Martin, James Callis as Colonel Andrews, Ricky Whittle as Captain East, and Jane Seymour as Mrs. Wattlesbrook were all WONDERFUL! They each fit the character they played SO WELL and each of them was so VERY entertaining to watch! Seriously, one of the best cast put together for an adaption for a book that I've seen so far.

2. Jennifer Coolidge & Georgia King--These two were so good they deserve their own spot! They were both SO OUT OF CONTROL throughout the movie! I had to pause the movie just to get through how hard my fits of laughter would be!! The part where Jennier Coolidge wakes up and tells Georgia King's character to shut her hole was so dang funny and the scene where she accidently shoots King's character in the eye with an arrow *Ahahahaha!* The both of them had such great comedic timing and were just so off the charts. All their scenes were amazeballs!

1. The Ending--I LOVE THE ENDING SO HARD TO AUSTENLAND!! For a crazy comedy where the romantic entanglements are just as crazy, the ending was perfectly done!! *dreamy sigh*

‘I’m part of the commonwealth.’ (Martin)
‘You couldn’t even get a part in the Hobbit.’ (Mr. Nobley)

“Hey, um, I’m not going to report your aunt so it was a little over kill to send you all the way here.’ (Jane)
‘She didn’t send me.’ (Henry)
‘Mr. Nobley, or whoever you actually are—”
‘My name is Nobley. It’s Henry Nobley. I’m a history professor.’
‘Oh . . . that’s really nice . . .'
‘I use to think that my aunt’s profession was somewhat grotesque but the truth is I enjoyed stepping into history; the idea of a simpler world where love is straight forward and lasting. I believe we have that in common . . . But all of this is secondary to the fact that I am completely mad about you.’
‘Alright, well, you may have been mad about Ms. Ernestwhile, but you don’t even know me—”
‘You are Ms. Ernestwhile. I saw you in the theatrical and you were horrifying.’
‘Whoa! Wait a minute! You were horrifying, I was . . . I wasn’t great—’
‘My point exactly. Neither one of us is capable of pretending.’
‘Nobley, I just don’t think—”
‘The night of the ball you said you wanted something real. I’d like to believe that I am real. Is it possible that someone like me could make you happy? Would you let me try?’
*leans in to kiss him then stops* ‘No! People don’t do this . . . This is my fantasy . . .’
‘Have you stopped to consider that you might have this all backwards? Jane, you are my fantasy.’”

Synopsis: Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen;or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It's all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?
